Brief History of KNUST (Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology)

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is Ghana’s premier science and technology university, and one of the top-ranked institutions in Africa.

Founding & Origins

  • Established: 1951 as the Kumasi College of Technology.
  • It began by admitting 200 teacher training students and initially operated under the University of London system.
  • In 1952, it absorbed the School of Architecture, Surveying and Building from Achimota School.

Transition to University Status

  • In 1961, under the leadership of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president, it gained full university status through an Act of Parliament.
  • Renamed the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in his honor.
  • It became the first university in West Africa focused specifically on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education.

1. Forms & Admission Portal

  • To apply, visit the official portal: apps.knust.edu.gh/admissions

  • Begin by creating an account with a valid email, then verify it via the confirmation 

  • Purchase an e‑voucher to access the application form:

    • Ghanaian applicants: GH₵290 via adesuadeals.com

    • International applicants: US $100–110 (USD$100 standard; some sources mention US$110 or GH₵1,550 equivalent)

  • Voucher can be bought: on Adesuadeals.com

    1. Online via portal with VISA/MasterCard/MoMo via https://adesuadeals.com/

    2. Once purchased, upload and verify voucher in the portal to proceed 

2. Application Deadlines

  • Undergraduate (Regular & Top‑Up): 31 October 2025 
  • International & mature/top‑up applicants: same deadline, 31 October 2025 
  • Distance Learning (IDL) undergraduates/diplomas: Deadline extended to 15 December 2025 
  • Ghanaian students awaiting WASSCE results may apply after results are released, typically with a 1‑week correction window

3. Entry Requirements

A. Undergraduates

  • WASSCE/SSSCE holders: Credits (A1–C6 or A–D) in English, Maths, Integrated Science and ≥3 electives; aggregate ≤24 
  • GBCE/ABCE holders: Credits in 6 GBCE (including English & Business Maths) and 3 compulsory + 3 optional ABCE subjects 
  • Advanced-level & IB/IGCSE: Equivalent academic credentials accepted; Ghanaian IB students pay same GH₵250 

B. Mature & Top‑Up Applicants

  • Mature applicants (age ≥ 25): WASSCE/SSSCE/GCE level requirements plus entrance exam or interview; HND holders require 3 years’ work experience 

  • Top‑Up programmes: e.g. Pharm D require professional background (e.g. 3 years post-registration experience) knust.edu.gh

C. International Applicants

  • Must provide equivalency certificates for foreign qualifications.
  • English-proficiency proof required for francophone/foreign-language credentials

4. Application Documents

Upload scanned copies of all relevant documents, including:

  • Birth certificate or ECOWAS ID
  • WASSCE/SSSCE/GCE/A-Level/IB/other transcripts
  • Professional certificates (if applicable)
  • Evidence of name-change (Gazette or equivalent, 5+ years old) knust.edu.gh

No hard copies are required at submission, though some sources note hard-copy delivery may be needed post-submission for Obuasi campus or by Ghana Post 

5. After Submission

  • Print your application upon submission .
  • A one-week window for corrections opens after WASSCE results are released
  • Monitor your portal for admission status—official updates are posted there.
