GIMPA’s 2025–2026 programmes and fee structure

Brief History of GIMPA (Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration)

The Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) is one of Ghana’s premier tertiary institutions, established to build capacity in public administration and leadership.

Origins

  • Founded in 1961 as a joint initiative between the Government of Ghana and the United Nations Special Fund Project.
  • Originally called the Institute of Public Administration, it was set up primarily to train public servants, particularly those in the newly independent Ghana civil service.

Transformation & Growth

  • In the early 1970s, it expanded beyond just civil service training to include broader areas of management, business, and governance.
  • The name changed to reflect its expanded mandate — becoming the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).

Autonomy & Academic Expansion

  • In 2004, GIMPA was granted full tertiary institutional status with the authority to award its own degrees, diplomas, and certificates.
  • It became a public university by Act of Parliament — but operates with financial and administrative autonomy, distinguishing it from traditional public universities in Ghana.

Schools & Campuses

GIMPA now consists of four main schools:

  1. GIMPA Business School (GBS)
  2. School of Public Service and Governance (SPSG)
  3. School of Technology (SoT)
  4. Faculty of Law

And has multiple campuses across Ghana:

  • Main Campus – Greenhill, Accra
  • Regional Campuses – Kumasi, Tema, Takoradi

 International Influence

GIMPA has collaborated with institutions such as the World Bank, UNDP, ECOWAS, and several African governments to train public sector leaders across West Africa.
