Parliament Considers Bill to Establish Ghana Scholarships Authority

Parliament is currently considering a Bill that seeks to establish the Ghana Scholarships Authority, a statutory body mandated to oversee the administration and management of scholarships in the country.

The proposed Authority will be responsible for coordinating, regulating, and monitoring the award of scholarships to students both locally and abroad. Its mandate will include setting eligibility criteria, ensuring transparency in the selection process, and aligning scholarship opportunities with Ghana’s broader human capital development goals.

Presenting the Bill, officials noted that the establishment of the Authority will help address challenges associated with the current scholarship administration system, including delays, inadequate oversight, and unequal access. The initiative is expected to provide a more structured, transparent, and efficient framework for supporting students.

The Authority will also prioritise scholarships in key areas such as science, technology, engineering, health, and other disciplines deemed critical to national development.

Parliament is presently debating the provisions of the Bill, after which it will proceed through the requisite stages of approval. Stakeholders in the education sector have expressed confidence that the new Authority, once established, will ensure fairness in allocation and improve the impact of scholarship funding.
